Russ Francis, Patriots Tight End, Dies in Plane Crash at 70
Former New England Patriots tight end Russ Francis died in a plane crash on Sunday, October 1, at the age of 70. He was killed when the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed near the Lake Placid Airport in upstate New York.
Francis was a fan favorite during his playing career, which spanned 13 seasons from 1975 to 1988. He played for the Patriots during two stints, from 1975-80 and 1987-88, and also played for the San Francisco 49ers from 1982-1987.
Francis was a two-time All-Pro (1976, 1978) and a three-time Pro Bowl selection (1977, 1978, 1979). He was also a member of the Patriots all-decade team for the 1970s and the Patriots 35th Anniversary Team.
Francis finished his career with 393 receptions for 5,262 yards and 40 touchdowns. He was known for his athleticism, blocking ability, and sure hands.
After retiring from football, Francis went on to have a successful business career. He also became a pilot and was passionate about flying.
In a statement, the Patriots said they were "deeply saddened by the sudden and tragic loss of former New England Patriots tight end Russ Francis."
"Russ was a fan favorite throughout his playing career," the statement said. "He was a dynamic player on the field who had an even bigger personality off it. He knew no boundaries, pushed the limits and lived his life to the fullest."
Francis is survived by his wife, three children, and two grandchildren.
